ChatGPT starts citing sources: what search inside a chatbot changes
OpenAI launched ChatGPT search on 31 October 2024. Two consequences matter for a Swiss SME: one about checking answers, one about being found.
On 31 October 2024 OpenAI launched ChatGPT search, initially for Plus and Team users. The model now recognises when a question needs current information, fetches it from the web, and answers with links to the sources it used.
This is a smaller technical step than it sounds and a larger practical one.
The first consequence: answers you can check
The single most common complaint about language models in a business setting has been that a confident wrong answer is indistinguishable from a confident right one. A citation does not fix that. It does make it cheap to verify.
That changes the economics of using the tool for anything factual. Looking up a customs tariff, a VAT rate, a competitor’s product range: previously the answer needed independent re-checking, which often cost more than the original lookup. With a link, checking is one click.
The rule for your team is simple and worth writing down: if the answer matters and there is no source link, treat it as a draft, not a fact.
The second consequence: your website has a new reader
Until now, your site was written for two audiences: people, and a search engine that sent people to you. A third has arrived, and it does not send anyone anywhere. It reads your page and summarises it for someone who never visits.
For a Swiss SME this cuts both ways. If your prices, opening hours, service area and certifications are stated plainly on your own pages, you will be quoted correctly. If that information only exists in a PDF, a photo, or your sales team’s heads, you will be summarised from whatever else is available — a directory entry, an old listing, a review.
One thing to do this month
Ask the tool about your own company. Not as a vanity exercise: read what it says about what you do, where, and for whom, and note every sentence that is wrong or out of date.
Then fix the underlying page, not the answer. You cannot edit the model. You can edit the source it read.
