How Swiss SMEs Can Check Their AI Visibility

A practical guide for Swiss SMEs to test how AI assistants describe their company, document the findings and correct factual errors.

Customers can now also turn to AI assistants when looking for products and services. Instead of simply clicking on search results, they ask questions: «Which fiduciary firm suits a small trade business?» Or: «What should I look out for when choosing business software?»

For Swiss SMEs, this raises an additional question: how is our company presented in such answers – and is the information accurate?

The good news: for a first assessment you need neither a large marketing budget nor an expensive GEO package. You need the right questions, verifiable company information and a clear process.

Reading time: approx. 5 minutes

What does AI visibility mean?

AI visibility describes whether and how a company appears in the answers given by AI systems. Under the term «Generative Engine Optimization», or GEO for short, people discuss approaches with which companies aim to improve how they can be found and how they are presented in such answers.

In doing so, you should keep different questions apart:

  • Presentation: does the AI describe your company correctly when you explicitly ask about it?
  • Findability: is your company mentioned at all in response to a relevant question?
  • Sources: which information or linked sources does the answer rely on?

An accurate company description does not automatically mean that your business appears in general recommendations. Conversely, a single missing mention is no proof that your company is fundamentally invisible.

Answers can vary depending on the system, the search function, the moment in time, the location and the conversational context. A test is therefore a snapshot, not a universally valid ranking.

How to check the way your company is presented

Start with five to ten questions that your potential customers might actually ask. Combine questions with and without your company name.

Examples:

  • «Which services does [company] offer in [location]?»
  • «Which providers of [service] are there in [region]?»
  • «Which of these providers are suitable for a business with ten employees?»
  • «How can I contact [company]?»
  • «Which sources support this information?»

Test these questions directly in the public AI services you want to examine. Note whether a web search is enabled, and start with a new conversation whenever possible.

Important: do not hand the AI the answer you are looking for. If you first upload your company profile and then ask about your company, you are checking how that material is processed – not your public visibility.

Confidential customer information, internal documents or trade secrets do not belong in such test queries.

Document instead of judging by gut feeling

A single convincingly worded answer can be correct, incomplete or wrong. So do not only save your conclusion, but also the basis for it.

For each test, the following is enough to begin with:

  • Date and service used, and the model shown where applicable.
  • The exact question and the complete answer.
  • Search functions that were enabled and the sources named.
  • Errors identified and the corresponding verifiable information.
  • Ownership and the next review date.

Then classify the results: is a piece of information wrong? Is an important service missing? Is an outdated address mentioned? Or does your company simply not appear in response to one particular recommendation question?

This distinction helps to separate genuine factual errors from fluctuating recommendations.

Improve the public foundations first

If incorrect information appears, start by reviewing your own publications. Are your services, location and contact options clearly described on your website? Does this information match relevant industry directories and company profiles?

The following are particularly worthwhile:

  • Clear service pages: describe specifically what you offer, for whom and in which region.
  • Consistent company details: keep your name, address and contact information up to date.
  • Helpful answers: answer real customer questions in plain language and with information that can be followed up.
  • Technical accessibility: check whether relevant pages are crawlable and indexable; structured data must match the visible content.
  • Verifiable evidence: use approved references, documented qualifications and solid sources instead of unsupported superlatives.

This work supports a reliable web presence and classic search engine optimisation. However, it guarantees neither inclusion in AI answers nor additional orders.

Where Hegyon supports the workflow

Taking stock is only the beginning. What matters is whether an identified error turns into a verified correction.

This is where Hegyon, as a Swiss SME business platform, can help to organise the internal work:

  • AI chat and model comparison: develop customer questions, revise texts and compare different wordings.
  • Wiki and company knowledge: document approved company descriptions and test instructions internally.
  • Tickets and projects: record corrections with ownership and due dates, and follow them up.

The boundary matters here: a model comparison in Hegyon is no proof of what users see in the public versions of ChatGPT, Gemini or other services. Search functions, context and product configuration can differ.

Internal company knowledge does not become publicly visible simply because it is stored somewhere. It helps your team to work consistently; the approved information still has to be maintained in the appropriate public channels.

Your next step: a manageable pilot

Start with one location, one important service and five typical customer questions. Check the answers in two public AI services and document the results.

Correct factual errors first. Repeat the test later under conditions that are as comparable as possible. When doing so, assess not only the mentions but also the quality of the information. For business value, qualified enquiries and traceable contact paths also count.

AI visibility does not begin with a promise of more recommendations. It begins with verifiable information and clear responsibilities.
