What 2024 actually changed for a Swiss SME

Strip out the announcements that did not touch you and four real changes remain. A quiet-week summary.

A great deal was announced this year. Most of it did not reach a thirty-person company in Aargau. Four things did, and they are worth naming before January.

1. The price of a competent answer collapsed

The same quality of output cost a fraction at the end of the year that it cost at the start, through prompt caching, smaller models matching larger ones, and simple competition. Ideas that failed a business case in early 2024 may pass now without any change to the idea.

2. AI stopped being something you choose

It arrived in software you already owned. Your mail client summarises. Your phone rewrites, since October. Your SharePoint can answer questions about its own documents, since November. Nobody in your company signed a purchase order for any of this.

That is the single biggest practical shift: the question moved from « should we adopt AI? » to « do we know where it already is? »

3. The rules acquired a date

The EU AI Act entered into force in August and its first obligations land on 2 February 2025. The revised Swiss data protection law has applied since 2023 and already governs what your staff type into a chatbot. Neither is heavy for a normal SME. Both reward one page of written thinking and punish none at all.

4. Verification became a business process

Video and voice generation went public this year. A face on a call and a voice on the phone stopped being proof of identity. For a small company that moves real money, the two-channel confirmation rule is no longer good practice. It is the minimum.

What did not change

Your master data is still in five systems. Your quotations are still assembled by hand. Nobody has solved that with a model, and 2025 will not either.

The companies that got value from AI this year were not the ones with the best tools. They were the ones who picked one irritating, repetitive, well-understood task and finished it, then picked another.

That is the whole method. Everything above is context.
