The third launch in a fortnight arrives on schedule
Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.5 yesterday, completing the set. The pattern of the last three weeks is more informative than any of the three models.
Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.5 on 24 November 2025, thirteen days after GPT-5.1 and six days after Gemini 3. Three providers released their strongest models within a fortnight of each other.
That synchronisation is not a coincidence, and what it tells you is worth more than the specifications.
Why they all arrived at once
Because none of them can afford to be the one without a current model at the end of the year, when budgets are written and comparisons are made. This is a competitive dynamic, not a technological one — the same reason car manufacturers announce at the same motor show.
The practical implication: expect this again in roughly six months, and expect the quiet period between now and then to be a better time to negotiate than the loud one.
What a buyer should conclude from the three together
That the top of this market is now a commodity in the economist’s sense: three suppliers, comparable products, competition on price and terms rather than on exclusive capability.
Commodity markets are good for buyers and boring for the press, which is why the coverage will keep emphasising differences that will not survive the next two quarters.
The one difference that does persist
Not capability — where the processing happens and under what contract. The September question about European data centres remains the one where providers genuinely differ, and where the difference is not closing on its own.
If you are comparing the three, compare them on that. It is the axis where the answer will still be true in a year.
And the thing not to do
Not to test all three this week. The method from 14 November works, but running it three times in November means running it on three moving targets while your attention is worst.
January, with twenty examples and a quiet office, will produce a better answer than November with a full inbox.
