The Paris AI Action Summit: the word that changed
Heads of state meet today and tomorrow. Compare the title with the two summits before it and the shift in international mood is visible in one word.
The AI Action Summit opens in Paris today, 10 February 2025, running through tomorrow, bringing together governments, industry, researchers and civil society.
The most informative thing about it is the name. The 2023 gathering at Bletchley Park was the AI Safety Summit. Seoul in 2024 was the AI Seoul Summit. This one is the AI Action Summit, with an agenda built around investment, adoption and competitiveness.
What the shift means
Eighteen months ago the international conversation was organised around risk: what could go wrong, who tests for it, what should be restricted. Today it is organised around deployment: who builds capacity, who captures the economic benefit, how fast.
Neither framing is wrong. But a company planning three years ahead should notice which way the wind is blowing, because it affects how quickly rules arrive and how strictly they are enforced.
What it does not change
The EU AI Act. Its timetable is in law, and summit declarations do not move it. The obligations that started last week still started last week, and the general-purpose AI provisions still arrive on 2 August.
Swiss obligations likewise. Whatever is said in Paris this week, your data protection duties are unchanged on Wednesday.
The useful reading for an SME
Two things.
Pressure to adopt will increase. When governments frame AI as competitiveness, that language reaches your industry association, your bank’s relationship manager and your larger customers. Some of it will be useful. Some will be pressure to buy things before you have a process for them.
The governance work does not go out of fashion. A lighter regulatory mood does not make a wrong answer in a quotation less expensive. The reasons to know where your data goes and who checks the output were never mainly about regulators. They were about not being wrong in front of a customer.
Summits change the weather. They do not change whether your supplier master data has duplicates.
