A European model provider is now a real option. What that does and does not buy you

Mistral shipped Pixtral Large and a substantially upgraded Le Chat on 18 November 2024. For Swiss buyers, the interesting question is not benchmarks.

On 18 November 2024 the French lab Mistral released Pixtral Large, a 124-billion-parameter multimodal model with open weights and a 128k context window, and upgraded its Le Chat assistant with web search, citations and image generation.

Benchmark comparisons will be argued over for weeks. The more useful question for a Swiss company is what a credible European provider changes in a procurement conversation.

What it genuinely buys you

A shorter data path. A provider established in the EU, offering EU-hosted inference, removes the transatlantic transfer question from that particular tool. Not the data protection question — the transfer question. Those are different, and only one of them gets simpler.

Negotiating position. Even if you stay with an American provider, a viable alternative changes the conversation at renewal. Concentration risk is only manageable when there is somewhere to go.

Open weights. A model published under an open licence can, in principle, be run on infrastructure you control. Few SMEs will do this. The ones with genuinely sensitive material now have an option that did not exist two years ago.

What it does not buy you

European origin is not a data protection guarantee. The questions stay identical: where is inference performed, what is logged, for how long, is your content used for training, who are the subprocessors. A French company can process your data in a US cloud region, and some do.

It is also not automatically the better tool. Fit for your language, your document formats and your workflow matters more than the flag on the headquarters.

The sensible test

If data residency is a real constraint for you — a client contract, a professional secrecy obligation, a cantonal requirement — then put a European option into your next evaluation and make the vendors answer the same five questions side by side.

If it is not a real constraint, choose on capability and price like any other purchase, and note the European option as your documented fallback. Both are defensible positions. Choosing by reflex in either direction is not.
